Pilates is a proven exercise technique which has been in use for over seventy years, offering both mental and physical training. It relies on strengthening the core postural muscles, which stabilise the torso, through slow, controlled exercises. By correcting muscle imbalances the body is realigned and may once again move freely and without pain. The method is proving popular for those with recurrent back pain syndromes and is recommended by both osteopaths and doctors. Pilates exercise is taught on mats, and also by means of specially designed equipment that provides physical assistance and/or resistance to the patient. In a rehabilitation context, this equipment can help an injured person perform functional movement successfully, leading to safe recovery. |

Individual pre-booked programmes using machine & mat work and group mat
courses are held in our fully equipped Polestar Pilates Studio (on the 1st
floor of the clinic). Every person who comes into the Pilates studio will
have a fitness screening which will ensure that the exercises selected for
that person will be safe and appropriate. Our Pilates instructors,
Jane-Elizabeth Williams, Debbie West and
Sue Maddocks, collaborate closely with other
members of the Tarka Clinic team to facilitate integration of the
exercises with the other forms of treatment given. Debbie West has recently completed a course in Pilates for pre- and post-natal women; this combines well with our osteopathy and massage facilities for pregnant women and for babies and children, providing a complete service for this group. |
