Homoeopathic remedies are produced by a method called 'potentization'. The original medicine is obtained in the form of a tincture, for example by boiling, soaking, drying and drying a plant. The tincture is then sequentially diluted by 1:10 (X) or 1:100 (C). So, for example, a remedy that has been diluted 30 times by 1:10 has a potency of 30X. Between each dilution, the remedy is vigorously shaken, a process called succussion. Paradoxically, the more dilute the remedy, the higher the potency. High potency remedies may theoretically not have a single molecule of the remedy in the solution; however, there is ample evidence that these remedies do work.

Homoeopaths do not regard the body as a number of physical or chemical
reactions. Instead, they view it as having a vital force, and see
this as controlling all bodily functions, thus keeping the organism in a
harmonious balance. The force is responsible for the ability of the
organism to heal itself after injury or illness. When the vital force is
disturbed, symptoms arise. Homoeopaths thus seek to find out what has
happened to the vital force via the symptoms produced, and then match
the symptoms produced by the remedy to those produced by the disturbed
vital force to bring about a cure.

| Homoeopaths do
not necessarily regard symptoms as bad. Indeed, they are valuable
pointers to what is happening to the vital force. Symptoms can even
indicate that the body is trying to heal itself; for example, a fever is
helpful in increasing the body's metabolism to eliminate toxins and
invading micro-organisms. The process of finding the appropriate remedy is somewhat like a detective searching for the original cause of the disturbance; for example a skin eruption may be caused by an emotional upset, which in turn may be accentuated by a particular type of personality. The homoeopath would treat the underlying personality, and the skin eruption would then cure itself |

Homoeopathic remedies are particularly gentle, but they produce profound changes in the body. As\well as adults, they are suitable for infants, children and the elderly, and are even used for animals. A homoeopathic consultation consists of a very detailed exploration of every facet of the patient's symptoms and other areas of his/her life, after which the practitioner will take some time to analyse the information and arrive at the appropriate remedy. Follow-up sessions aim to monitor the patient's progress and perhaps modify the remedy in the light of changing symptoms. | ||||
